Day 7
consumption
water- I drank a few cups of water and haven’t been home all day so i have yet to shower! but i plan to take about a 10 minute shower!
food- I had another pop tarts and a hot chocolate since i went to my friends football game and didn’t want to freeze to death. For lunch I went to a cookout and there were hotdogs and steak tips and chips.. the usual. For dinner I ordered pizza since I was babysitting!
electricity- charged my phone overnight, lights, computer
gasoline- I drove to BC high for a football game, back to west roxbury for a cookout, then back to brighton and home to Jamaica Plain.. a lot of driving today!
money- $13.50 for pizza
reduction- Well i haven’t showered yet but I will continue to keep the amount of time i stay in for low. I also wasn’t on my phone at all because i was so busy and this is the first time i’ve been on the computer all day!
sustainability- Similar to Stephen, I’ve been trying to tell as many people as I can about our project and the long term effects of what our actions hold in the World, but people are clue less and give me a hard time about it.. i think i kind of jam it down their throats to try and listen to me.. and sometimes it works!
peers- I think the conclusion to this project is that we can cut down a various amount of things in our lives, but as Shoshonna and her mom stated in the article, it is impossible for citizens living in a developed country to live the life of someone in a third world country. Although this is true, i think it was important to realize how hard their lives must be like compared to ours.
Day 6: Food Friday
1. Consumption -
Water – few glasses of water, teeth brushing, toilet flushes, hand-washing, 10 minute shower. Food – Breakfast I had poptarts, lunch i had my regular lunch my dad makes me. its a sandwich pretzels mandarines, the uuusual! So i didn’t eat dinner because i had practice then went to the hypnotist show and got home late after that (which is why i’m posting this now because i passed out once i got home - sorry!) Electricity – I charged my phone once, my lights are on and i ran the dish washer. Gasoline – My friend gave me a ride home from his house after the hypnotist, and other than that i took the T to get to school in the morning. $$Money$$ - $.50 on chips at lunch 2. Reduction – So i’ve begun actually shutting my phone off in school, which dramatically reduced energy use from that. I also have been keeping my shower the same time (shorter than before) and been using MBTA as much as possible. Since I was hardly home on friday, I didn’t go on the computer and hardly used my phone which was great! 3. Sustainability – I could stay off the computer like i did on friday because i get a lot more done and a more productive day without everything and so many destractions. I’ve also turned off my phone in school and while im doing my homework which helps with homework! I usually get rides from my friends a lot and i could definitely take the MBTA more. 4. Following – I haven’t read anyones posts yet but i wil and i’ll write something in my saturday one!
Day 5: Technology Thursday!
1. Consumption - What did you consume today?
Please make a list for your usage of the following substances
Water – Drank one bottle of water, took a 10 minute shower, brushed teeth, washed my face (:
Food– Breakfast I had brown sugar pop-tarts, lunch & dinner i had chicken mac&cheese and pizza (nice & healthy)
Electricity – computer, charging my phone, lights
Gasoline – train and bus to school, bus to the game and walked home from there
$$Money$$ - Spent no money
2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?
I’m really trying not to use my phone as much anymore, which in turn causes it not to lose battery and i don’t have to charge it as much. I also don’t need to listen to music as much as i had been. I’m also trying to stay off of social networking sites which is probably the hardest thing for me. I’m also trying to take shorter showers and i think i’m getting my time down a lot from before! i’ve also been recycling all the plastics i find and use in meals or anything else! This is weird but i guess how many squares of toilet paper i use? HEY everything adds up!
3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.
I can definitely stay off my phone after the challenge since its not necessary and it helps me focus not to have it around as much. I also realized i don’t need to be on Facebook every second, which helps me get my work done faster. Shorter showers is also something i will work into my routines.
4. Following - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions because of this?
I am really amazed at the article Anthony uploaded about the beached whales that purposefully stranded themselves on New Zealand’s harbor. I am from there and a huge animal lover and would do anything i could do save ones like these. That was a huge reality check for me in order to change the way im living to help save the other creatures on Earth.
Animal Suicides?
This past monday, 61 whales purposely beached themselves in New Zealand. Why did these animals act to kill themselves? Is this even common? The Slate explains:http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2011/11/beached_whales_in_new_zealand_do_animals_commit_suicide_.html

Day 3: Try Harder Tuesday!
1. Consumption - What did you consume today?
Water: i want to say 3 glasses of water, flushed the toilet, &shower 2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources? I’m trying not to drink as much water as I usually do since I consume more than i actually need. I also am taking shorter showers and not buying coffee every morning, which is harder than it seems! I’m also trying to take mbta as much as possible 3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples. Its hard for me to make changes and consciously think about what to reduce through out my daily routine since this is the environment i’ve been brought up in, but i could definitely cut down the amount of time i spend in the shower and on the computer. I also don’t need to spend money on coffee every morning. I will try to take public transportation as much as possible as well. 4. Peers - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post? I think everyone is reducing on the same basic things, computer usage, shower time and gasoline and i think thats important but i agree with Shoshanna’s article too. It is virtually impossible for people who have been brought up in a developed and privileged country to try and switch their ways of life, but its definitely a good thing to be conscious about.
Food: salad, ramen, yogurt w/ granola, lunch (sandwich, mandarines, cookies etc)
Electricity: computer, phone, lights, heat
Gasoline: took the train to school& my friend gave me a ride home
Money: spent no money!
okay i don’t know if i got kinza’s video accurate but its still an idea!
DAY ONE: Social Networking Sunday
1. Consumption - What did you consume today?
- Water- a sip of water from a water fountain (no plastic bottles) and a glass with my dinner! i also took a shower which was slightly longer than usual since i had to get the unnecessary about of hair spray out of my hair from my competition
- Food- WELL today the cheerleaders had a competition so Beth and I downed a few pounds of candy for breakfast for a sugar rush effect.. no lunch and for dinner i had soup&salad!
- Electricity- NO television and i’m desperately trying to stay off facebook
- Gasoline (fossil fuels)- I’ve only been home for dinner so i’m not too sure what the temperature has been like; but its usually freezing since my mother doesn’t believe in turning the heat on until the temperature drops to fatal. and i had to drive to woburn and back for a competition, other than that none!
- $$Money$$ - didn’t buy anything today
2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?
Today was nice and third-world-like! I woke up to Beth Castellano yelling from the bathroom saying she wasn’t going to flush the toilet so we proceeded not do it all day! Instead of drinking from lots of plastic water bottles, I drank from water fountains as much as possible.
If I didn’t have as much hair spray in my hair, i wouldn’t have taken as long of a shower as I did, but I think that i could definitely cut down my shower time from now on …especially since its no shave november(-;
I was hardly on my phone today and except for homework, I have not been on the computer for social reasons. I also usually watch television and am trying to refrain from watching the pats game!
The heat in my house was definitely not on since everyone is walking around in sweatshirts..but as i stated above its pretty normal for it to be this way. My mother likes to use our fire place which provides enough heat for a family of ants.
3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.
I could definitely change the amount of time I am in the shower and on Facebook since i spend a lot of time on both. Usually the second I get home I either watch television or go on my computer to check facebook which I have realized is totally unnecessary. I have also noticed that I take showers for 10 times longer than what is necessary instead of taking short quick showers so i can do more in my day…mind you i don’t think i could reduce it any lower than 10 minutes since thats what im used to. One thing I don’t think I could permanently reduce is my consumption of water, as i don’t drink milk or any other nutricious drinks and since i have practice every day I consume a lot of water. But enviro has begun i have tried not to buy plastic water bottles anymore.
